第二次世界大戦のナチス政権下で発表されたハンス・アスペルガーの論文は、英語圏では長く無視されていました。
ローナ・ウイングは、知能の低い自閉症（カナー型）に加え、知能の高い自閉症例としてアスペルガーの論文を掘り起こし、知能の高低にかかわらず自閉症が存在すると言う、「自閉症スペクトル」の理論を確立し、医学会で認められWHOでの講演と言う栄誉を与えられました。
そのローナ・ウイングの「自閉症スペクトル」理論の一助になったハンス・アスペルガーの論文を英文に翻訳したのがウタ・フリスです。
この本には、ハンス・アスペルガーの論文だけでは無く、主に知能の高い自閉症の事に関する論文が幾つか収められています。
